Jawfish rival sharks as my favourite sea critters. (I also have a fondness for Nassau Groupers, but that's another story).
We found this particular jawfish burrowed in the rocky sea floor at about 100 feet (31 metres) in the Sea of Cortez, near La Paz, Mexico in October 2015. One hundred feet is pretty deep and divers use up a lot of air at that depth. As a result, our time with the jawfish was limited.
I love its big, round eyes, freckles and wide mouth. It looks like a perfectly drawn cartoon character. The part we could see – the head – was about the size of a small bowling ball. Unfortunately, we didn't get a peak at the backend.
