I’m off to Mexico on Saturday. Doing things a wee bit differently this time. Instead of going directly to Cozumel to dive, I’m taking the long way there with stops in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. This trip is made up of four parts – three to places I’ve never been.
First stop, the beaches of Cancun. Have avoided this like the plague because I hate drunks. But, earlier this year, I decided I wanted three days at an all-inclusive to do nothing. Enjoy beverages (or maybe not), slop on gobs of 60 SPF sunscreen and chillax under a palapa. Kinda regretting this now after reviewing the cost. Outrageous. Anyhoo, it’s booked and I’m going. I’ve cheaped out on all the rest of the accommodations.
After that, I’m off to Isla Mujeres, a short ferry ride away, for three nights. I’ll be doing a whale watching trip, but not diving. As much as I love to dive, I want to see more than just sea critters when I travel. I also don’t want to lug wet scuba gear to my third stop, Cozumel. I’ll travel there by ferry back to Cancun, bus to Playa Del Carmen and ferry to Cozumel.
I’ve been to Cozumel more times than my aging brain can count. I was there in March and going back again in December. I was also there in August and October 2016. And December 2015. It’s my favourite close-ish to Vancouver warm water dive spot. La Paz, in Baha California South, is closer and also has great diving. But it’s way more expensive. I love diving in Roatan, but it’s a pain to get to and airfare is costly.
I’ll be in Cozumel for seven nights and diving for six days. With my fave dive shop. If you click on the link you’ll see me in the image. Under the letters ESP. I’ll be reuniting with at least four other divers in that picture in December.
I’ve also threatened to do a Facebook Live broadcast from the world famous Thirsty Cougar. My frequent drinker card is packed (double checked) and the plan is to drink one of their giant frozen margaritas on camera. We’ll see if this turns out! Watch my Facebook page for more info. Tentative date is Saturday, August 26 at 4:00 pm pacific time. This could be the bad idea of the century.
The last leg of the journey is four nights in Mexico City. I’ve changed planes in the airport, but never been to the city. Very excited. I watch the Spanish language Canal Once (channel 11) newscast from Mexico City every night, so I feel like I sorta know-ish the place. (Gave up on watching Canadian and US newscasts years ago).
I’ve got my cameras ready – taking three plus my iPhone. I’ll be posting a lot of images. So brace yourselves.
I’m don’t take for granted for one second how fortunate I am to travel.
